Our History
1956
The beginnings
In November 1956, four professors from the American University of Beirut open a specialized engineering firm to meet rising regional demand. It is the beginning of Dar Al-Handasah. For its headquarters, the firm chooses Beirut, the most dynamic market in the region at the time.
1986
The Group is formed
Dar Group is officially established as it broadens beyond the founding business, Dar Al-Handasah, by acquiring American architecture and design firm Perkins+Will, the first in a number of important partners in engineering, management and architecture.
1989
Increasingly global footprint
Dar Group acquires US civil and structural engineering firm T.Y.Lin International, increasing its stronghold in the US and opening up new opportunities in Asia.
1990
Entry into the UK market
Dar Group makes its third acquisition, UK-based Penspen, an engineering, operations, integrity and maintenance services company for the oil and gas industry.
2004-2005
Momentum builds with two further acquisitions
Over two years, Dar Group purchases South African
R&H Rail, an integrated consulting services firm for the railway sector in 2004. In 2005, Dar Group acquires UK-based independent professional consultancy firm
IPA Advisory. These acquisitions bring new markets & transactions; regulation & policy; and PPP expertise across the energy, water and infrastructure sectors in the UK, EMEA and Asia.
2007
Opportunities in global aviation sector
Dar Group acquires leading US airport and aviation planning consultancy firm Landrum & Brown, opening up the aviation sector in China, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
2009
Enhancing infrastructure expertise
Dar Group acquires Austrian consultancy business D2 Consult International, with specialisms in modern infrastructure, automated tunnelling and complex lining systems. The Group further expands its US building system design presence by acquiring Integral Group.
2009
Dar Group acquires American firm Ross & Baruzzini, enhancing its engineering, technology consulting and architectural expertise and capabilities in the aviation, education, government, healthcare and mission critical industries.
2012
Pioneering through acquisitions
Dar Group acquires the UK based consultancy firm Currie & Brown, which in 2016 itself acquired Sweett Group plc to complement and enhance the Group’s existing project management offering, whilst also increasing its foothold in existing and new markets.
2012
Dar Group establishes Project Finance Advisory, Ltd. (PFAL), in the US to provide complementary expertise in large-scale infrastructure and real estate financial advisory services for public and private sector clients.
2013
Dar Group acquires Italian engineering company Maffeis providing specialist engineering services for Tension Membrane/Fabric Structures and ETFE foil designs for long span structural applications such as stadia covers, facades and retractable roofs.
2016
Dar Group today, a global leader
Dar Group is one of the world’s top international professional services firms, with over 18,000+ staff in 200 offices spanning the Americas, Europe, Australasia, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
